Now that the Labor Day weekend has passed, I want to start this discussion. In 2008, we had a pretty lively discussion here about the presidential races, primary and general elections. I enjoyed it.

Who's voting to maintain the status quo and why? Who's voting to put conservatives, regardless of party affiliation, into office at all levels of government? Who's voting against the incumbent just because he/she is the incumbent? Who's voting against the Democrat Party viewing this election as a referrendum on President Obama? Who's sitting out the election because they're fed up with politics as usual?

I'm voting for the following reasons...

First, I vote. Unless there is something beyond my control, I vote and usually vote early.

Second, this time, I'm voting in the hopes of seeing the opposition party in Congress. If that means the Republicans gain control of the House and/or the Senate, so be it. Since Congress controls the purse strings per the Constitution, our nation needs the fiscal restraint this scenario could produce. A $13 trillion national debt is absurd!

Third, this is an opportunity to get rid of some alleged conservatives in Congress, particulary in the Senate. In Ohio, RINO (Republican in name only) George Voinovich is, thankfully, retiring. Rob Portman is running for that seat. He is a fiscal conservative and will get my vote.

Fourth, Obamacare needs to be repealed or defunded. We simply can't afford it.

At the GB Press-Gazette site, the Packers announced Tramon Williams will be the primary PR and Jordy Nelson will be the primary KR against the Eagles. Here's the link...

http://packersnews.greenbaypressgaze...n-punt-returns

I like the fact the duties are split because Nelson didn't do well as a PR last season. He was OK as a KR.

I don't like exposing Williams as a PR, but there seems to be no better solution. At least, he has experience returning punts.

What really bothers me is the penalties the Packers drew during returns last season. Nelson had one KR TD called back due to a penalty. The leading culprit, IMO, on ST penalties was Jarrett Bush and he's still on the team. Jarrett Bush is expendable!

I know the Packers devoted more time to ST practice during training camp. I think the punt and kickoff teams will be better. With a new punter and Sam Shields as a gunner, I expect improvement in coverage. I have concerns about the return units, especially with Tramon Williams at PR.

GO PACK GO!

Green Bay Packers cutdown analysis

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Kevin Seifert

Check here for a full list of Green Bay's roster moves.

Biggest surprise: Spencer Havner was the Packers' No. 3 tight end last year and this summer, but his versatility seemed to make him a valuable part of the roster. He's a competent receiver, a good blocker, decent on special teams and also can play linebacker. Perhaps he wasn't good enough in any of those roles to justify a roster spot for. I don't know for sure. Regardless, the Packers chose veteran Donald Lee, rookie Andrew Quarless and also Tom Crabtree ahead of him. Meanwhile, we discussed the possibility that defensive back/kick returner Will Blackmon might get squeezed out. But it appears the Packers believe he isn't close to recovering fully from an October knee injury. They officially placed him on injured reserve, but he'll eventually be waived in accordance with an injury settlement.

No-brainers: The Packers parted ways with offensive lineman Allen Barbre, who had a disastrous seven-game stint at right tackle last season. It was about time. Like Blackmon, Barbre was placed on injured reserve, but eventually will be waived. On the other side of the equation, the Packers couldn't do anything but keep rookie cornerback Sam Shields. I'm not sure how much he'll play immediately, but he showed too much potential this summer to risk exposing to waivers.

What's next: Waiving Chris Bryan should mean that Tim Masthay will be the Packers' Week 1 punter, but we'll wait to get confirmation from the Packers on that. After parting ways with Blackmon and Jason Chery, it's not clear who will be the Packers' kickoff or punt returners. Likely candidates are running back Brandon Jackson and receiver Jordy Nelson. As of now, the Packers have more fullbacks on their roster (three) than running backs (two). I wonder if that will change in the coming days.
He was cut by the Chargers. I remember his days with "Da Bears." He was a competent CB, but was more dangerous as a PR/KR. He might be worth a look to add depth at CB and replace Blackmon as the primary KR/PR. Jarrett Bush is expendable!

There's really not been a lot of drama about the 2010 lineup for the Packers. The base offense, defense and special teams, except for punter, have been pretty much known since the opening of training camp. The competitive spots have been for back-up and core special teams players and with cut down time fast approaching those will soon be known as well.

Will the Packers keep 3 fullbacks again this year? No. I suspect Quinn Johnson will be the one to go, though. He's not been the dominating lead blocker the club thought and needs him to be and he loses out in the competition with John Kuhn and Korey Hall on his ball handling. Hall & Kuhn can at least periodically catch passes or rush better than Johnson has shown and they're at least as good or better special teamers.

The Packers will need fullbacks who can catch and rush since the runningback situation got a little thinned by the injury to rookie James Starks. Ryan Grant and Brandon Jackson will do virtually all the touches from the backfield but having some depth for that with Kuhn and Hall is what will tip the balance for them.

Will Donald Lee make the team? Probably not. He has too high a salary to be a back-up and misses more passes than he should as well. There's a reason the Packers have drafted tight ends in 2 of the last 3 drafts. Jermichael Finley is the clear starter. Spencer Havner gives more value with his versatility. Andrew Quarless is too good a prospect to give up.

Are we finally done with Allen Barbre and Breno Giacomini? Yes. Neither has shown any improvement over what they have been for the last couple of years or to justify keeping them on any longer. They're one position players as well and the Packers want back-ups who can play at least a couple positions on the line to preserve cherished roster places. Evan Dietrich-Smith will hang on depending upon Jason Spitz's back.

Is the Justin Harrell torture over? Yup. The former first round pick hasn't stood out enough to take the risk of keeping him and his high salary around another year. Time for him to join Tony Mandarich, Rich Campbell, Brent Fullwood, Jamal Reynolds in the dumpster at the Packers Hall of (in)Fame(y).

Who wins the punting job? I'm thinking now it'll be Tim Masthay. He's been better on his hang times and spotting and brings additional value as being able to do kickoffs.

Does Frank Zombo make it? He's become this year's preseason darling to the fans and and I think he stands a reasonable chance of being kept. Clay Matthews' hamstring injury could be pesky and having a guy of Zombo's size and pass rushing potential just in case would make sense.

Who gets thinned out of the secondary? Well, we know Charles Woodson, Tramon Williams, Nick Collins and rookie Morgan Burnett are the starters. The Packers will be waiting on Al Harris. Will Blackmon gets in on his punt returning abilities. Atari Bigby will get parked on the PUP list at least. Derrick Martin brings special teams value. Pat Lee and Brandon Underwood are still favorably regarded as prospects by the Packers. Charlie Peprah and Jarrett Bush have been proven survivors of last cuts before.

How many quarterbacks will be on the roster this season? Two. The Packers may well put Graham Harrell on the practice squad, where he could be taken by another club. But with Aaron Rodgers young and in his prime for a long time yet and Matt Flynn even younger and set as the back-up there's no great loss to the Packers if that happens.

What about Sam Shields? Blazing speed but still looked raw at covering and decision-making and ball security as a return man. That nobody took him in the draft says something.

Any surprises to emrge among the backs and receivers? No. Kregg Lumpkin or Quinn Porter may make the practice squad but the prospect the Packers will be working on and protecting is still injured James Starks. It's virtually impossible for any one to crack the wideout group of Jennings, Driver, Jones and Nelson and Brett Swain will probably stay on another year.

I liked the offense absent the two fumbles and the failed QB sneak, especially without Jennings. The Packers lit the Colts up.

In the second half, I saw some good cuts from Porter. Lumpkin looks like he follows his blockers better. I don't who makes the team between those two.

Zombo is making very good progress as is Burnett. Shields may not be the PR the Packers wanted, but his improvement is real. He might be the nickel/dime CB the Packers need. Jarrett Bush may have lost his job (we can only hope!).

On the d-line, Mike Neal looked good. I don't think Justin Harrell did himself any favors.

On the o-line, there will be some hard decisions to make. Colledge seems set at LG, but what of Spitz? Dietrich-Smith looked good and will be hard to cut. Several times, I noticed Barbre in and several plays called to the opposite side. Does anyboby think he'll make the roster? At TE, Crabtree looked solid, especially as a blocker.

*Analysis: Undrafted rookie Frank Zombo has decent shot at making roster*

       By Pete Dougherty (pdougher@greenbaypressgazette.com) •...

Analysis: Undrafted rookie Frank Zombo has decent shot at making roster

By Pete Dougherty • greenbaypressgazette.com • August 23, 2010

The Green Bay Packers first turned to Brandon Chillar for the outside linebacker they didn’t draft or sign in free agency last year.

Now just one of those three rookies, Frank Zombo, remains on the roster, and though he didn’t distinguish himself early in camp, he’s played well enough recently to force the Packers to take a harder look at him at outside linebacker and to have a shot at landing on their 53-man roster.

In two preseason games, Zombo has three quarterbacks hits, one sack and six tackles. The sack came Saturday at Seattle in the third quarter when he beat backup tackle Joe Toledo one-on-one as part of a four-man rush and dropped quarterback Charlie Whitehurst for a 3-yard loss.

Zombo’s chances of making the roster depend in part on whether the Packers keep eight or nine linebackers, though even if they keep only eight he’s putting up a good argument to stick ahead of outside linebackers Robert Francois and Cyril Obiozor for that final spot. However, he could end up on the practice squad if the Packers trade for an outside linebacker or claim one on waivers after final cuts.

Because Jones’ shoulder injury kept him out of Monday night’s practice, the Packers gave Zombo snaps with the first-team defense on the outside while Chillar worked as an inside linebacker.

“He’s a high-effort player,” coach Mike McCarthy said of Zombo after Monday night’s practice. “Tough kid, played through injuries. He’s had a nice camp up until now. He’s earned every opportunity.”

Zombo is one of three undrafted rookies who has a decent shot at a final roster spot, along with cornerback Sam Shields and halfback Quinn Porter.

NFL teams have to make their first roster cut to 75 players by 3 p.m. on Aug. 31 and the final cut to 53 players by 5 p.m. on Sept. 4.

Following is a position-by-position breakdown of the Packers’ roster with the final cut two weeks away. The likely number of players they’ll keep at each position is in parenthesis:
Linebackers (8 or 9)

Lock: ILB Nick Barnett, OLB Clay Matthews, OLB Brad Jones, ILB A.J. Hawk, OLB-ILB Brandon Chillar, ILB Desmond Bishop, OLB Brady Poppinga.

On the fence: OLB Frank Zombo, OLB Robert Francois, ILB Alex Joseph.

Long-shot: ILB Maurice Simpkins, OLB Cyril Obiozor.

Comment: Jones at this point appears likely to retain his starting job ahead of Chillar, though a shoulder injury could keep him sidelined for at least another week. If Jones holds the jobs, there’s a good chance Chillar would move back inside in the nickel defense, where he’s the Packers’ best cover linebacker.

The Packers probably could get something for Bishop in a trade, but it also would leave them more vulnerable to injury issues at a critical position in their 3-4 scheme, so the offer might have to be sweeter than is realistic to expect to get GM Ted Thompson to bite.

Joseph is a decent athlete who’s chances of sticking are falling fast because of a quadriceps injury that’s sidelined him since Aug. 7.

Francois moved inside last week against Seattle because of injuries but looked out of place, and hasn’t been as effective a rusher in practice as Zombo on the outside.
Defensive line (6 or 7)

Lock: NT B.J. Raji, DE-NT Ryan Pickett, DE Cullen Jenkins, DE Mike Neal.

On the fence: DE Justin Harrell, DE Jarius Wynn, DE C.J. Wilson, DE Ronald Talley.

Long-shot: NT Anthony Toribio.

Comment: If Harrell can stay healthy the final two weeks of camp, he’ll make it. But that’s far from a given because of his long-term back issues, especially after he missed a day of training camp last week when his back acted up. The former first-round pick isn’t a stud but has been a good backup end in camp.

If Harrell makes it and the Packers only keep six here, Wynn has the inside track. He’s played better since coach Mike McCarthy’s mildly criticized him early in camp. Talley spent last season on the practice squad, but his chances this year have taken a hit because he’s been in and out of practice while coming back from offseason knee surgery.

Wilson, a seventh-round draft pick, looked intriguing in the offseason because of his athleticism as a pass rusher, but that hasn’t translated to pads. If the Packers keep seven, he has a decent chance of sticking ahead of Talley, but if they keep six he might be headed for the practice squad.
Secondary (10 or 11)

Lock: CB Charles Woodson, CB Tramon Williams, S Nick Collins, S Morgan Burnett, CB Brandon Underwood, CB Pat Lee.

Good bet: CB Sam Shields, S-CB Will Blackmon, CB Al Harris.

On the fence: S Atari Bigby, S Derrick Martin, S Charlie Peprah, CB-S Jarrett Bush.

Long-shot: S Anthony Levine, CB D.J. Clark.

Comment: Harris appears ready to come off the physically unable to perform list this week, which would mean he’d be game-ready early in the season, maybe even for the opener, as either a starter or the third cornerback for the nickel. But if he doesn’t come off PUP within the next week, he could end up staying there for the first six games of the regular season.

Shields has been a disaster catching punts, but it’s hard to see him getting cut because somebody would pick him up. Though he’s raw after moving from receiver to cornerback only for his final season in college, he’s shown big-time potential at that position and can help immediately as a gunner covering punts, which he showed against Seattle last week.

Lee played better than Underwood last week against Seattle and still could push past him for the No. 3 cornerback while Harris is out. Though Seattle picked on Underwood with some success Saturday night, both he and Lee have been OK overall in camp.

It’s looking more likely Bigby will stay on PUP for the start of the season, and thus be ineligible to play until after six games, after undergoing ankle surgery the first week of camp.

With how weak the Packers are behind Blackmon in the return game, he should make the roster on that alone, though his ability to play cornerback and safety in a pinch is a plus.

Bush has looked better in the two preseason games at cornerback than all last year, but he’s not as good as Underwood and Lee. If he makes the roster it will be for special teams, where he’s remained a core player in camp.

Martin has an edge on Peprah in special teams, though Martin’s personal foul for punching a Seattle player on a punt return last week doesn’t help his cause.
Quarterbacks (2)

Lock: Aaron Rodgers, Matt Flynn.

Long-shot: Graham Harrell.

Comment: It’s a given the Packers will save the roster spot again this year and keep only two quarterbacks on their final 53. Harrell has looked better as camp has gone on and has a decent shot at sticking as the de facto No. 3 on the practice squad, though maybe somebody the Packers liked coming out of college will be available after final cuts.
Offensive line (9 or 10)

Lock: T Chad Clifton, G Daryn Colledge, C Scott Wells, G Josh Sitton, T Mark Tauscher, T-G Bryan Bulaga, T-G T.J. Lang, G-C Jason Spitz.

On the fence: T Breno Giacomini, C-G Evan Dietrich-Smith, G-T Allen Barbre, T-G Marshall Newhouse.

Long-shot: T Chris Campbell, G-C Nick McDonald.

Comment: Colledge and Spitz remain the most likely of several players to be dealt, though Thompson might be reluctant to take a dent out of his depth here.

Colledge has had a solid camp with his job on the line but could be the most likely for a deal. For one, he could fetch some value with 60 NFL starts on his resume. Second, Bulaga has played at least as well if not better at left guard. Plus, both Lang and Spitz could be expected to hold up well there if injuries hit during the season.

Giacomini is playing himself off the roster because of his shortcomings in pass protection in the two preseason games. Dietrich-Smith is undersized but finds a way to stay between his man and the quarterback in pass protection and looks like a legit NFL backup. Newhouse, a fifth-round pick, started poorly but has played better at tackle as camp has gone on, and is worth a practice-squad spot if nothing else.

Barbre is a good athlete but is missing something in pass protection, which makes the former fourth-round pick look expendable barring injuries.
Receivers (4 or 5)

Lock: Greg Jennings, Donald Driver, James Jones, Jordy Nelson.

Good bet: Brett Swain.

Long-shot: Patrick Williams, Chastin West, Jason Chery, Charles Dillon, Shawn Gore.

Comment: The Packers are about as good as anyone in the NFL going four deep at this position.

Swain probably isn’t full speed after having his knee rebuilt late last year but is a core player on special teams and caught three passes for a 17-yard average against Seattle.

Williams, Chery, Dillon and West are possibilities for a spot on the practice squad, though none looks like a keeper at this point in their careers.
Tight ends (3 or 4)

Lock: Jermichael Finley.

Good bet: Spencer Havner, Andrew Quarless.

On the fence: Donald Lee, Tom Crabtree.

Comment: All five of these guys are NFL players, and if the Packers want to keep them all they can do it by looking at Havner as a two-position player and counting him as much at linebacker as at tight end. He’s one of the team’s best special teams players, and showed ability as a red-zone receiver last year.

Quarless is raw and a shaky blocker but flashes enough receiving talent that he might not make it through the waiver wire to the practice squad if cut.

Lee hasn’t distinguished himself in camp, but if the Packers cut him they’d be taking a big risk getting caught thin in experience if Finley got hurt.

Crabtree has shown great toughness as a blocker and playing through a wrist injury, though his running and receiving skills might be suspect.
Running backs (5 or 6)

Lock: RB Ryan Grant, RB Brandon Jackson.

On the fence: RB Quinn Porter, RB James Starks, FB Korey Hall, FB John Kuhn, FB Quinn Johnson, RB Kregg Lumpkin.

Comment: Hard to see Thompson keeping three fullbacks on the final 53 again, though never say never. Hall is the best special-teams player of the three and thus would be the toughest to cut. Kuhn also has been a core special-teams player in camp and showed a little added value as an emergency halfback Saturday at Seattle. Johnson has blocked well in both preseason games but doesn’t catch well and hasn’t worked his way onto any first-team special teams.

Starks, a sixth-round draft pick, has missed camp because of a hamstring injury, and if he doesn’t return this week his chances of making the roster are minimal. He then would end up on injured reserve or the practice squad. Porter is small (205 pounds) but has some burst and running skill, and rates an edge on Lumpkin, whose hamstring injury is killing his chances.
Specialists

Lock: K Mason Crosby, LS Brett Goode.

On the fence: P Chris Bryan, P Tim Masthay.

Comment: Looks like the punting battle will go to the wire. Bryan’s edge is he’s been a pro athlete and played in front of big crowds in Australian Rules Football. Masthay has been the better place-kick holder. Not much separating their production.

In tonights GB vs Seattle game(live on the NFL Chnl at 7pm) MM threw the bean bag for a 17 yd pass compl. by Seattle when it was pretty clear he caught it, lost the challenge. Then in the second half, Flynn gets blind sided and fumbled the ball, but the replay showed that his right knee was on the ground when the ball was knocked out. The announcers(Seatle fans)never mentioned that fact and MM never threw the beanbag and just gave up the ball on GB's 40 yd line where they passed us on the scoreboard. Maybe he had his crystal ball out and saw that B. Jackson and G. Harrell would take over at the end of the 4th qtr to pull the game out? Zombo looked good too.
