This year was a complete failure for the team. But one of the few bright spots was Trevor Hoffman. Great to see he will be back for 2010
Hoffman option has escalators By Tom Haudricourt of the Journal Sentinel Oct. 5, 2009 2:07 p.m. A source just confirmed to me that closer Trevor Hoffman indeed has reached agreement on a new deal with the Brewers that will pay him $8 million next season with a mutual option for 2011 that has escalators in it. As reported by Fox.Sport's Ken Rosenthal, that option can be worth as much as $8.5 million, depending on how many games Hoffman finishes next season. The option has a buyout of $500,000, which increases to $1 million if Hoffman finishes 40 games in 2010. Despite missing the first three weeks of the season this year with an oblique injury, Hoffman finished 46 games. Overall, he appeared in 55 games, converting 37 of 41 save chances with a 3-2 record and 1.83 ERA. The Brewers loved the leadership position Hoffman took in the clubhouse as well, including conducting clubhouse ceremonies to commemorate various milestones achieved by teammates. Hoffman arranged for fellow relievers Toddy Coffey, Chris Smith and Chris Narveson to accompany him to Minneapolis tonight for the Packers-Vikings-Favre extravaganza. That's the kind of guy he is. Assistant GM Gord Ash said the Brewers will have no announcement on Hoffman today. Apparently, they will wait until Wednesday when Melvin and Ash conduct a former end-of-season press conference.

I didn't think the season was a complete failure. We were right in the thick of things until about the start of August. I don't think its a coincidence that around that time is when Bush and Hart went on the DL and Parra got shipped down to the minors. Get both of those guys back to good pitching form, plus a healthy Weeks and Hart back next year along with emerging star Casey McGehee.....I like the looks of this team.
I also wouldn't mind parting ways with Hardy if he can't hit .280. He was horrible this year. |

I do agree that the team somehow stayed in it until August and the injuries did hurt. Losing Weeks was probably the biggest blow. I just don't think a staff of Gallardo, Suppan, Bush, Parra & Looper had any chance to succeed. After Gallardo all of these guys are probably 4-5 starters at best on any MLB team. And Yovanni is not a legit #1 yet IMO. Melvin really has his work cut out to improve this pitching staff. A job that I feel he failed at miserably last year. Really would like to see them somehow be able to sign Prince to a long term deal but I don't think thats in the cards either. Hate to say it but trading him this offseason may actually be the smart move!
