The San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith suffered a season ending injury when he broke his shoulder Sunday.  This was the same shoulder that was injured last season as well.  Many are now speculating that Smith’s career with the 49ers may be over, perhaps his career period.

    Well, this suck!

    "Well, this sucks!"

Let’s all remember draft day in 2005.  Mel Kiper was projecting a certain Aaron Rodgers going number one overall to the 49ers, the same 49ers who had a certain Mike McCarthy as it’s offensive coordinator.  It was reported that McCarthy was in favor of Rodgers over Smith, but the organization went in a different direction.

Flash forward to the present and McCarthy got his wish.  Ultimately we still don’t know how things will play out, but as of right now it appears the Packers benefitted greatly from the 49ers error in judgement.

If you think Packers fans were much happier to see Favre traded to the AFC instead of the NFC, imagine how the CBS executives felt.  Starting today, the CBS early game will be the Dolphins against the Jets and yes it will be the CBS game in Wisconsin.  According to many reports, the Jets will be treated as an almost local market team in CBS’s TV coverage of the Jets.  Only a direct conflict with the Packers or an absolute rouser of a match-up will be keeping good old Brett from Packernation’s living room’s this season.

    EA Sports

Throw out all of the conventional thinking.  What really matters when picking your Sunday (Monday) winners is who wins when they face off in Madden 2009, the latest and best edition of the storied football video game.  The Packers, lead by Aaron Rodgers’ 332 yards and 2 touchdowns, won the game 30-16.  Travaris Jackson threw 4 game changing picks.

    Ahh, finally some assurance.

Flynn was drafted in the 7th round despite leading LSU to a BCS championship in 2008

Flynn was drafted in the 7th round despite leading LSU to a BCS championship in 2008

Not sure, but QB Matt Flynn worked for number two and got it;  the number two spot on the depth chart behind Aaron Rodgers.  After what has been a painfully obvious gap in effectiveness during this preseason between 7th round pick Matt Flynn and 2nd round pick Brian Brohm, the Packers made it official, naming Flynn number two and relegating Brohm to the number three role.

Despite strong preseasons, Hodge never delivered when it counted

Despite strong preseasons, Hodge never delivered when it counted

As the Packers finalized their roster for the upcoming season, two surprise names appeared on the cut list.  Fan favorite and former Hawkeye star Abdul Hodge was sent packing.  Hodge has battled injuries since his arrival in Green Bay.  Despite his tough hitting, his failure to grasp the pass defense aspects of the pro game combined with his durability issues led to his departure.

Also cut was veteran punter Jon Ryan.  These cuts were made to free up spots to retain special teamer Tracy White and long snapper Brett Goode

    First Aid Required

The line at the infirmary keeps getting longer as the regular season rapidly approaches. KGB decided to give it a go after being out several weeks with a knee injury, but only three days later he appears to have aggravated the injury and is questionable for the opener. AJ Hawk hasn’t seen any action whatsoever for a month after suffering from an upper chest injury. His availability for the opener will be key in shutting down the Vikings running game.

James Jones suffered a sprained knee last week. Both Atari Bigby and Nick Collins suffered injury in Denver as well and had to be helped off the field. Their status is totally up in the air. The offensive line is already without center Scott Wells and now they have lost Sitton with a sprained knee. It’s hard to prepare for the premiere defensive tackle duo in the league without having a consistent line up up front.

The defensive line lost Harrell for at least six weeks and Johnny Jolly could be suspended on drug charges should the commissioner decide to go that route if he is formally charged. His court date is Sept. 16th, so his services will be available for the opener.

The Packers need to get healthy, and fast. With games against the Vikings, Bucs, and Cowboys all coming in the first month a fast start is vital for a successful season.
